Psalm 13- Depression’s Antidote

”How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long will I store up anxious concerns within me, agony in my mind every day? How long will my enemy dominate me?

Consider me and answer, Lord my God. Restore brightness to my eyes; otherwise, I will sleep in death. My enemy will say, “I have triumphed over him,” and my foes will rejoice because I am shaken.

But I have trusted in your faithful love; my heart will rejoice in your deliverance. I will sing to the Lord because he has treated me generously.“

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭13‬:‭1‬-‭6‬ ‭CSB‬‬

Read Context

I love this Psalm!  It is shocking to me that it is part of scripture because it is so discouraging …until the very end!  Honestly, before I had faced depression myself, I didn’t understand this passage.  But afterward, it was so relatable…it spoke out the very essence of how it felt to be despairing.

The final verse brings with it so much confidence and encouragement!  All three statements are the author remembering who God has shown Himself to be in the past.  These are not hopeful statements, but concrete memories and absolute faith in who God is!

Lord, remind me of who You have always been in times of struggle so that I am not left in despair.  Help me to remember confidently Your faithfulness to turn even the worst situation into a time of transformation!  Grow my faith to trust you in every situation!!!
